Dear DSS 2023 Design Studies Symposium: Realities and Frontiers Participants, colleagues, and friends,
Thank you for your participation in the DSS 2023 held on 1-2 June and the positive feedback! We believe this turned out to be a productive graduate symposium, following a rigorous preparation period by our team. The symposium followed the Face-to-Fest of the previous year organized by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Emre Ergül, and we wish to expand with keynotes next year.
We had 4 sessions at the symposium: Explorations, Realities, Frontiers, and Crossovers. We all voted for the best paper which we gave to not one, but two presenters, Selen Çiçek (Adv. Prof. Dr. Mine Özkar) and Gökçe Çağatay (Co-Adv. Asst. Prof. Dr. Tuba Doğu and Asst. Prof. Dr. Deniz Avcı Hosanlı). We ended the first day with exhibition opening by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Onur Mengi, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şölen Kipöz, and Asst. Prof. Dr. Tuba Doğu, and a cocktail. The following day consisted of a smaller group discussion on the future of the program. The discussions were concentrated around some questions regarding unique qualities of the DS program. We thank all presenters, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şölen Kipöz, Asst. Prof. Dr. Özgül Kılınçarslan, Asst. Prof. Dr. A. Can Özcan, Asst. Prof. Dr. Gökhan Mura, Prof. Dr. Ö. Osman Demirbaş, as well as graduate students for their enthusiasm in raising novel questions that continuously helps to shape the program.
We especially designed the schedule as such, so that we could see the range of design research on the first day, share ideas and opinions in a supportive environment; and to follow this up with what we learned on the first day to inform the workshop meeting on the second day.
We thank our Dean Prof. Dr. Ender Yazgan Bulgun and our Vice Deans for their ongoing and kind encouragement, and all participants and presenters who joined in with ideas on our program and possible improvements. We thank Graduate School Dean, Prof. Dr. M. Efe Biresselioğlu for his support in realizing the event. We hope to publish all abstracts as well as selected papers, the second day discussions, and to continue the design studies discussions.
